Following the World Cup semi-final match-up in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, between Germany and Brazil and won by Germany, 7-1, Lisa Rodrigues da Cunha Saud, who attended the game with her brother, had this to say in answer to the reporter’s question regarding Brazil’s devastating loss to Germany:
“The time of bread and circus is over. Instead of stadiums, we need hospitals and schools.”
But Brazil will go on (witness the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro), probably no more or less than ourselves, creating one after another, athletic, musical, and other crowd pleasing spectacles or bread and circuses, when what both countries really need is better healthcare and better schools.
What would Lisa Rodrigues da Cunha Saud have said if her team had won? Probably nothing about “hospitals and schools.”
